Summary
New Jersey Medicaid will process retroactive eligibility for applicants approved after July 1, 2000, covering medical services received in the three months prior to application. Providers must encourage patients to inform county workers about unpaid medical expenses at the time of Medicaid application.
Action Required
Immediately: Train front desk staff to inform all Medicaid applicants to tell their county worker about any unpaid medical expenses from the three months before applying. Update patient intake forms to include reminder about reporting medical bills to county worker. For Essex, Hunterdon, and Warren counties, help patients request Retroactive Medicaid Application by calling (609) 588-2835 within six months of initial application.
