Summary
New Jersey Medicaid and NJ FamilyCare are discontinuing two local procedure modifier codes (WY and WZ) effective April 1, 2004. Providers must immediately replace WY (first trimester abortion) with national modifier UA and WZ (second trimester abortion) with national modifier UB on all claims with dates of service on or after this date. Claims submitted with deleted codes will not be accepted.
Action Required
Before April 1, 2004: Billing team and ambulatory surgical centers must update billing system and claims submission processes to replace modifier WY with UA for first trimester abortion procedures and modifier WZ with UB for second trimester abortion procedures. Update any internal code mapping tables, encounter forms, and billing templates. Verify that all claims with dates of service on or after April 1, 2004 use the new national modifiers. Inform all providers performing abortion procedures of the code change. Test billing software to ensure new modifiers are correctly applied. Claims submitted with the old local modifiers (WY, WZ) will be rejected by the state and require resubmission.
