Summary
Effective immediately, pharmacists must use the FDA's Electronic Orange Book to verify generic drug substitutions for PAAD and Senior Gold programs. If a drug is not listed in the Orange Book, pharmacists must consult the DURC Formulary (valid through May 17, 2005). Any drug not appearing in either resource requires prescriber consultation and approval before dispensing.
Action Required
Immediately: Pharmacy team must implement new generic substitution verification process for PAAD and Senior Gold beneficiaries. (1) Instruct all pharmacists to reference the Electronic Orange Book at www.fda.gov/cder/ob first to verify FDA approval and 'A' rating for any generic substitution. (2) If drug is not found in Orange Book, consult the DURC Formulary at N.J.A.C. 8:71 (valid through May 17, 2005). (3) If drug appears in neither resource, pharmacist must contact prescriber for written permission and confirmation before dispensing per N.J.S.A. 24:6E-8. Update pharmacy protocols and staff training to ensure compliance. Failure to follow this process may result in claim denials or regulatory violations.
