Summary
New Jersey Medicaid is implementing a contingency plan for the National Provider Identifier (NPI) requirement. Providers must notify the state of their NPI once received and can begin including it on electronic claims alongside their existing NJ Medicaid provider number.
Action Required
By May 23, 2008: Billing team must obtain NPI from the NPI Enumerator and notify NJ Medicaid program of the NPI. Update electronic HIPAA 837 transaction submissions to include both NPI and NJ Medicaid Provider Number. Continue using existing NJ Medicaid provider numbers until state establishes statewide deadline for NPI-only claims.
