Summary

New Jersey Medicaid now requires Present on Admission (POA) indicators for every diagnosis on inpatient hospital claims. Claims submitted without POA indicators will be denied, and the POA status determines whether higher-paying CC/MCC DRGs are reimbursed for Hospital-Acquired Conditions.

Action Required

Action needed
Immediately: Hospital billing teams must include POA indicators (Y, N, U, or W) for every diagnosis on all inpatient Medicaid claims. Update UB-04 forms to use the eighth position of diagnosis fields and 837 electronic claims to use K-3 File Information segment with 'POA' followed by appropriate indicator and 'Z' to end data element. Claims without POA indicators will be denied by Unisys.
