Summary
Ohio Medicaid (ODM) now allows certain independent provider types who hold doula certification from the Ohio Board of Nursing to add doula specialty (090) as a secondary specialty on their provider agreement. This enables existing Medicaid providers to offer doula services without losing their primary line of business. Affected provider types include RNs, LPNs, nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, social workers, counselors, and others listed in the policy.
Action Required
No immediate billing system changes required for most practices. If your organization employs or contracts with any of the listed provider types (RN, LPN, Nurse Midwife, Nurse Practitioner, Licensed Independent Social Worker, Clinical Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist, Chemical Dependency Counselor, or Registered Dietician Nutritionist) who have obtained Ohio Board of Nursing doula certification and wish to bill doula services under Ohio Medicaid, those providers should submit a request to add doula specialty (090) as secondary in the ODM Provider Network Management (PNM) system, attaching their BON doula certification. Billing team should be aware that doula services are now a billable option for these provider types under Ohio Medicaid, but no workflow changes are necessary unless your practice intends to actively bill for doula services.
