Summary
Effective July 1, 2018, all tobacco cessation products (including nicotine nasal sprays, oral inhalers, and varenicline/Chantix) no longer require prior authorization for NJ FamilyCare Medicaid managed care plans. This removes previous prior auth requirements to provide unimpeded access to tobacco cessation treatments.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must update prior authorization workflows to remove prior auth requirements for all tobacco cessation medications including nicotine nasal sprays, oral inhalers, and varenicline (Chantix) for NJ FamilyCare Medicaid managed care members. Update billing system rules and staff training materials to reflect that these products now have coverage without prior authorization.
