Summary
New Jersey increased the Personal Needs Allowance (PNA) for SSI recipients in nursing facilities from a lower amount to $50 per month, effective February 1, 2019. Retroactive payments covering the period from July 1, 2017 through January 2019 were also disbursed in February 2019. Billing teams must ensure SSI recipient accounts reflect the new $50/month PNA standard going forward.
Action Required
By February 1, 2019: Billing team must update nursing facility billing system to reflect the new $50 per month Personal Needs Allowance (PNA) standard for all SSI recipients. Verify that retroactive PNA payments from July 1, 2017 through January 2019 were processed and posted to resident accounts in February 2019. Update resident ledgers and account records to ensure going-forward PNA deductions align with the $50/month rate. Confirm with accounting that all retroactive adjustments have been reconciled. Contact the Medicaid Member/Provider Hotline at 1-800-356-1561 with questions about specific resident accounts or retroactive payment status.
