Medicare is replacing Social Security Numbers on beneficiary ID cards with new Medicare Beneficiary Identification (MBI) numbers. During the transition period (April 2018 - December 31, 2019), providers can use either the old HICN or new MBI number, but starting January 1, 2020, only MBI numbers will be accepted for Medicare and MO HealthNet claims.

Action Required

Action needed
By December 31, 2019: Billing team must update all systems and workflows to use Medicare Beneficiary Identification (MBI) numbers instead of Health Insurance Claim Numbers (HICN) for all Medicare and dual-eligible Medicaid claims. Update billing software to accept MBI format, train staff on new card format, and verify patient eligibility using MBI numbers. Claims submitted with old HICN numbers after January 1, 2020 will be rejected.
