Summary
Medicare has completed the transition from Social Security Number-based Health Insurance Claim Numbers (HICN) to new Medicare Beneficiary Identification (MBI) numbers on Medicare cards. All Medicare claims submitted after January 1, 2020 must use the new MBI number, as claims with old HICN numbers will be rejected.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must verify all Medicare claims use the new MBI number instead of old HICN numbers. Update billing system settings to capture MBI from new Medicare cards. Train front desk staff to copy MBI from patient's new Medicare card during registration. Claims submitted with old HICN will be rejected for DCN/MBI mismatch.
