Summary
Effective January 1, 2020, all Medicare claims must use the new Medicare Beneficiary Identification Number (MBI) instead of the Social Security Number-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN). Claims submitted without the correct MBI will be denied for DCN/MBI combination mismatch.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team must update all patient records to use the new MBI numbers from Medicare beneficiary cards. Update billing software to capture and validate MBI format instead of HICN. Train staff to collect new Medicare cards from all Medicare patients. Claims filed with old HICN numbers will be denied for mismatch errors.
