Summary
Effective August 1, 2020 for fee-for-service and October 1, 2020 for Medicaid Managed Care, non-dental practitioners including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and registered nurses can now apply fluoride varnish in primary care settings using CPT code 99188. Coverage allows maximum of 4 annual applications for children from birth to 7 years of age.
Action Required
Immediately: Billing team should verify CPT code 99188 is active in billing system for fluoride varnish applications by eligible non-dental practitioners. Update encounter forms and EMR templates to include CPT 99188 for pediatric patients birth to 7 years. Configure system to limit to maximum 4 applications per year. Train providers on eligibility requirements and documentation needs.
